من أظرف الكتب التي صدرت في مصر، في القرون الوسطى، (القرن الخامس عشر الميلادي) كتاب شهاب الدين الأبشيهي المعروف بـ«المستطرف في كل فن مستظرف». وكان من أظرف ما سجله صاحب «المستطرف» في كتابه هذا أن الخليفة العباسي أبا العباس السفاح كان يعجبه السحر والمناظرات الأدبية والعلمية والدينية أمامه. فحضر عنده يوماً إبراهيم الكندي وخالد بن الأهتم التميمي. فحرض الخليفة، إبراهيم الكندي، على الكلام عن قومه، فقال عنهم إن أهل اليمن هم العرب الذين دانت لهم الدنيا. وقد ورثوا الملك كابراً عن كابر، وأخيراً عن أول. منهم النعمان والمنذر ومنهم عياض صاحب البحرين. وليس من شيء له خطر إلا إليهم ينسب. إن سئلوا أعطوا، وإن نزل بينهم ضيف قروه. فهم العرب العاربة وغيرهم العرب المتعربة.
فقال الخليفة أبو العباس: ما أظن التميمي رضي بقولك هذا. ثم سأله ما تقول يا خالد؟ قال إن أذن لي أمير المؤمنين في الكلام تكلمت. قال: تكلم ولا تهب أحداً. قال: لقد أخطأ المقتحم بغير علم ونطق بغير صواب. وكيف يكون ذلك لقوم ليس لهم ألسن فصيحة، ولا لغة صحيحة نزل بها كتاب ولا جاءت بها سنة. يفتخرون علينا بالنعمان والمنذر، ونفتخر عليهم بخير الأنام وأكرم الكرام سيدنا محمد عليه الصلاة والسلام. فمنا النبي المصطفى والخليفة المرتجى. ولنا البيت المعمور وزمزم والحطيم والمقام والحجابة والبطحاء. ومنا الصديق والفاروق وذو النورين والرضا الولي وأسد الله وسيد الشهداء. ومنا عرفوا الدين وأتاهم اليقين. فمن زاحمنا زاحمناه، ومن عادنا اصطلمناه.
ثم أقبل على إبراهيم وسأله: ألك علم بلغة قومك؟ قال: نعم. قال: فما اسم العين عندكم؟ قال: الجمجمة. قال: فما اسم السن؟ قال: الميدن. قال: فما اسم الأذن؟ قال: الصنارة. قال: فما اسم الأصابع؟ قال: الشنانير. قال: أفعالم أنت بكتاب الله عز وجل؟ قال: نعم. قال: فإن الله تعالى يقول إنا أنزلناه قرآناً عربياً. فنحن العرب والقرآن بلساننا أنزل. ألم تر أن الله تعالى قال: «العين بالعين»، ولم يقل والجمجمة بالجمجمة. وقال تعالى «والسن بالسن» ولم يقل والميدن بالميدن.
ثم سأله إني أسألك عن أربع إن أقررت بهن قهرت. وإن جحدتهن كفرت. قال: وما هن؟ قال الرسول منا أو منكم؟ قال: منكم. قال: فالقرآن أنزل علينا أو عليكم؟ قال: عليكم. قال: فالمنبر فينا أو فيكم؟ قال: فيكم. قال: فالبيت لنا أو لكم؟ قال: لكم. قال: فاذهب. فما كان بعد هؤلاء فهو لكم، بل وما أنتم إلا سائس قرد، أو دابغ جلد، أو ناسج برد. قال: فاستغرق الخليفة أبو العباس بالضحك وأقر لخالد وحياهما جميعاً بكرمه. وكان كله مما أورده صاحب «المستطرف» في كتابه الغني واللذيذ الذي أشرت له آنفاً في عاليه. والملاحظ فيه اعتزاز العرب بلغتهم العربية، وربط كل ذلك بديانتهم وإيمانهم وبالمصحف الشريف بصورة خاصة، حيث يرجعون إليه في الصغيرة والكبيرة، مما يخطر إليهم في حياتهم وفي أدبهم، كما لا بد أن لاحظ القارئ الكريم.
