قال مسؤول أميركي، الجمعة، إن طائرة بدون طيار “درون” استخدمت في الهجوم على الناقلة النفطية التي استهدفت أمام شواطئ عمان، ما يزيد من احتمال “أن تكون حكومة أو ميليشيا” وراء الهجوم، بحسب وكالة أسوشييتد برس.

ونقلت قناة 13 التلفزيونية الإسرائيلية تصريحات “مسؤول كبير” لم تكشف عن اسمه قالت إنه “ألقى اللوم على إيران في الهجوم القاتل الذي استهدف الناقلة” ميرسر ستريت.

وقالت شركة زودياك ماريتايم التي تدير الناقلة  إن اثنين من طاقمها قتلا في الهجوم، مضيفة، أن عضوي الطاقم هما من المملكة المتحدة ورومانيا، فيما أشارت إلى أنها “ليست على علم بأي إصابات أخرى بين الطاقم”.

وذكر بيان مقتضب صادر عن عمليات التجارة البحرية في المملكة المتحدة، التابعة للجيش البريطاني، أن التحقيق جار في الحادث الذي وقع في وقت متأخر من مساء الخميس شمال شرق جزيرة مصيرة العمانية، ولم يكن من أعمال القرصنة.

ويقع الموقع على بعد أكثر من 300 كيلومتر (185 ميلا) جنوب شرق العاصمة العمانية مسقط.

وتعود ملكية ناقلة النفط إلى ياباني، بينما تدير السفينة القاعدة البريطانية لشركة زودياك البحرية المملوكة من رجل الأعمال الاسرائيلي إيال عوفر، الذي يحتل المرتبة 197 على قائمة أثرياء العالم، وفق تصنيف فوربس، بثروة تقدّر بـ 11,3 مليار دولار.
