قال جاك دورسي، مبتكر موقع تويتر والمدير التنفيذي للموقع، إن وجود الكثير من المتابعين ليس الهدف الأساسي المنشود من خدمة تويتر ولم يكن أمرًا ذا بال في الماضي أو اليوم.

وأضافت أن عدد المتابعين يعد ميزة إيجابية، لكن نريدها أن تكون صحيحة وذات معنى ودقة.

على مر السنين، أغلق تويتر العديد من الحسابات التي يشعر بنشاط غير عادي فيها أو سلوك مشبوه ومفاجئ.

ويقوم الموقع بالتواصل مع مالكي الحساب للتحقق، وفي حال لم يتم تعيين الحساب بإعادة كلمة المرور فإنه يقفل أو يترك دون قدرة الشخص على الدخول للحساب.

وقد أدت حملة القمع الأخيرة للحسابات الزائفة إلى فقدان الموقع 2.4 مليون من متابعي تويتر نفسه، لكن جاك لا يرى ذلك مزعجًا.
