وأشار أحد العاملين في الجنائز إلى أن “ضحايا كورونا حالياً أعلى بكثير من العدد المعلن في وسائل الإعلام”، موضحاً أنّ “مشارح المستشفيات تخطت قدرتها الاستيعابية بكثير ويتم حاليا إرسال الجثث إلى مكان التخزين المؤقت في مكتب كبير الفاحصين الطبيين (OCME) أو الشاحنات المبردة.
وقد تمّ إطلاع وزارة الأمن الداخلي على حيثيات الأمر من قبل مسؤولي مدينة نيويورك، محذرين من ان المدينة قد تفقد قدرتها على تخزين الجثث خلال الأسبوعبن المقبلين.
في غضون ذلك، ذكرت التقارير أنّ “السلطات الصحية في نيويورك، أقامت مشرحة مؤقتة في نفس المكان الذي استخدمته من قبل أثناء هجمات 11 سبتمبر/أيلول 2001 في محيط مستشفى بمانهاتن تحسباً لزيادة أعداد ضحايا فيروس كورونا”.
وقد وضع في هذه المنطقة شاحنات ثلاجة، وكمامات، وخيام بيضاء، وأشرفت على التجهيز شرطة نيويورك وإدارة الطب الشرعي.

وكان الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترامب، وجه نداء للشعب الأمريكي أمس قال فيه “أريد أن يكون كل أميركي مستعدا للأيام الصعبة التي تنتظرنا.” في حين أعلن كبيرا أطباء الحكومة الأمريكية، أنتوني فوسي، وديبورا بيركس ، المسؤولين عن الأزمة، في حديثهما في البيت الأبيض يوم الثلاثاء، إن جهودهما تنصب على محاولة إبقاء أعداد وفيات البلاد من الفيروس القاتل إلى أقل من 240 ألف شخص.
