تجاوز عدد الذين أصيبوا بفيروس كورنا المستجد منذ بدء انتشاره في ديسمبر الماضي، 20 مليونا حول العالم، مساء الأحد، أكثر من ربعهم في الولايات المتحدة الأميركية وحدها، بحسب موقع worldometers الذي يرصد تطور الوباء.
وأودت جائحة كوفيد-19 بحياة 733 ألفا و329 شخصا حول العالم، منهم نحو 163 ألفا في الأراضي الأميركية، حيث يشهد منحنى العدوى ارتفاعا كبيرا منذ نهاية يونيو.
وكثيرا ما عزا الرئيس الأميركي، دونالد ترامب، أعداد الإصابات المرتفعة في البلاد إلى التوسع الكبير في إجراء الاختبارات.
أما البرازيل، ثاني أكثر دول العالم تضررا من الوباء، فقد سجلت رسميا ثلاثة ملايين إصابة. ويشكك الخبراء في صحة أرقام الإصابات والوفيات هناك بسبب ضعف عدد الفحوص.
والتزم الرئيس البرازيلي، جاير بولسونارو، الصمت حيال هذا الموضوع، واكتفى بنشر تغريدة على تويتر تنوه بالعدد المرتفع للمتعافين، كما احتفى بفوز فريقه المفضل لكرة القدم، ما أثار موجة غضب على شبكات التواصل الاجتماعي.
في أكبر دول أميركا اللاتينية التي يقطنها 212 مليون ساكن، سلطت الجائحة الضوء على التفاوت، إذ تفشى الفيروس بشكل خاص في الأحياء الفقيرة التي تعيش فيها أغلبية السكان السود.
وسجلت إصابة من كل اثنتين تقريبا في العالم، في أميركا اللاتينية، خلال الأيام السبعة الماضية.
وخلف الوباء تداعيات اقتصادية رهيبة في المنطقة. ففي الإكوادور مثلا، خسر نحو 700 ألف شخص وظائفهم منذ ظهور الفيروس.
وفي أوروبا، أودى الوباء بحياة أكثر من 213 ألف شخص في القارة، وثمة إشارات مقلقة إلى إمكان تفشيه من جديد.
وخلافا لبقية دول العالم، شهدت نيوزيلندا، الأحد، يومها المئة على التوالي من دون تسجيل أي إصابة جديدة.
ولم تسجل الدولة، التي تعد خمسة ملايين نسمة وتعتبرها منظمة الصحة العالمية نموذجا لجهة احتواء الوباء، سوى 1219 إصابة و22 وفاة.
وتحاول الكثير من الدول، إبطاء انتشار الوباء على أمل إيجاد لقاح.
وهناك حوالى 26 لقاحا مرشحا في مراحل مختلفة من التجارب، بينها ستة “في مرحلة جيدة من التجارب السريرية” وفق ما أكد مدير برنامج الطوارئ الصحية في منظمة الصحة، مايكل راين، الخميس الماضي.
